Donors of artworks to the Lytham St Annes Art Collection
As Tagging the Treasures volunteers have been researching the artworks in the Collection they have found interesting material and facts relating to the donors of the paintings, sculptures and artefacts. The Collection began in 1925 with the donation of The Herd Lassie by Richard Ansdell being given to St Annes Town Corporation by John Booth. Booth's example was followed by Alderman James Dawson, who generously donated a significant number of very high quality artworks and inspired others in the local area to do the same. As the Collection grew in size it also grew in popularity and there was an influx of donations during WWII. There are different theories as to why many paintings were donated around the 1945 period - was it for safe keeping, to hide the works from perceived doom, or a show of philanthropy to cheer up dark times?
Listed on this page are the known donors in alphabetical order.
