ARTIST

Frederick William Catterall was born in Fishergate, Preston in 1850, the son of 'a tailor and draper who employed 20 men'.  In 1882 he married Annie Mary Bertwistle,1860-1952, at St Paul's Church, Blackburn.

An architect, he designed and built the Grand Hotel for Mrs Rose Holloway on what was then an isolated spot amongst the sand dunes.  Within reach of several golf clubs, attracting many players, it became known as 'the golfers' hotel'.

He, himself, was a keen sportsman, both as a competitive golfer and, in his youth, a rugby player.  It is recorded that he attended the formation meeting of Preston Grasshoppers Rugby Club held in the Bull Hotel, Preston on 28 September 1869.  In addition he rowed for Preston Rowing Club.

A man of many talents he was also an artist and his paintings still occasionally come up for auction.

He died in Okehampton, Devon in 1923.
