Frederick William Catterall was born in Fishergate, Preston in 1850, the son of 'a tailor and draper who employed 20 men'. In 1882 he married Annie Mary Bertwistle,1860-1952, at St Paul's Church, Blackburn. An architect, he designed and built the Grand Hotel for Mrs Rose Holloway on what was then an isolated spot amongst the sand dunes. Within reach of several golf clubs, attracting many players, it became known as 'the golfers' hotel'. He, himself, was a keen sportsman, both as a competitive golfer and, in his youth, a rugby player. It is recorded that he attended the formation meeting of Preston Grasshoppers Rugby Club held in the Bull Hotel, Preston on 28 September 1869. In addition he rowed for Preston Rowing Club. A man of many talents he was also an artist and his paintings still occasionally come up for auction. He died in Okehampton, Devon in 1923. DONOR Annie Mary Bertwistle, born in Blackburn in 1860, was the daughter of architect, land agent and surveyor, Thomas Bertwistle and his wife, Mary. In 1882 she married architect Frederick William Catterall (1850-1923)at St Paul's Church, Blackburn. Frederick was the architect of the Grand Hotel in St Annes, built in 1897. The 1901 census shows the couple living at 'Sandhills', South Drive, St Anne's on Sea' (now Clifton Drive). She and her husband were keen golfers, playing at Lytham St Annes Golf Club. Later they bought The Hey, a former rectory, in Thornleigh, Okehampton, Devon. Frederick died there in 1923 and Annie moved to Little Nutcombe in Hindhead, Surrey. In December 1945 she offered four paintings; one described in the Town Hall Minutes as an 'oil-painting by Caffieri', now known to be Portrait of a Lady, and three watercolours, Teignhead, painted by her husband, Rue St Etienne, John Skinner Prout (1804-1876) and View of Ambleside, Cuthbert Rigby (1850-1935). This final painting is presently unlocated presumed missing. She was concerned as to how these could be transported and so the Council despatched an empty case for her to pack the artworks and send them by rail. Annie died in 1952 in Little Nutcombe at the age of 92. |
