Eliza was born in 1880 in Chorlton, Manchester, to Harry Godwin, a haberdashery buyer, and his wife, Eliza.
In the 1881 census the young Eliza was living in Moss Side, Chorlton, with her widowed father and three siblings, her mother having died the year she was born. Her father married again in 1882 and her half sister, Lilian, was born in 1884. In 1891 the family was living in Sale, Cheshire. Eliza was described as a typist in 1901.
In 1903 Eliza married Cecil Quilliam in Salford. He was born in 1882 on the Wirral, and in 1901 was residing in Heaton Norris, Stockport, Cheshire, at which time his occupation was given as a clerk at a steel merchant’s. His parents were Isabella and William Hughes Quilliam, an accountant.
In the 1911 census Eliza was visiting in Burnley, but there is no record of Cecil in the census or in later death records. However, a Cecil Quilliam emigrated to Canada in 1912, sailing on the SS Laurentic. The 1911 census also reveals that Eliza had given birth, but unfortunately the child had died. Eliza filed for divorce in 1925.
Electoral Registers from 1929 to 1939 show Eliza and Lilian living at East Beach, St Annes on Sea. Her later address was Talbot Terrace, also in St Annes.
Eliza died in 1975 at Holland House, 31 Church Road, Lytham St Annes.
