James Turner was born in Sabden, Lancashire, in 1886 to James, a power loom overlooker, and his wife, Jane. In 1891 the family was living in Blackburn and the younger James was employed as a music teacher.
By 1901, and married to Annie, born 1869, he had become 'a pianoforte dealer' and by 1911, living in Wilpshire, near Blackburn, his occupation was described as 'a musical instrument dealer'. They had four children, James, Joseph, Annie and Edith, all born in Blackburn. The 1939 Register shows James and Annie living at 11 Clarendon Road, Lytham St Annes, but at the time of Annie’s death in 1947 their address was 42 Lightburne Avenue. James died in Blackburn in 1954, aged 87, and probate was granted to the Reverend James Turner and Annie Holden, a widow. Walter Dendy Sadler (after) 1854-1923
