Ellen Halstead

Research by Marjorie Gregson
Ellen Pickles was born in Todmorden in 1872 to D Pickles, a house draper, and his wife, Sarah Ann. Before her marriage Ellen worked as an assistant draper, probably in the family business.

In 1895 she married Sam Halstead, born in Todmorden in 1871 to John Walker Halstead, a cotton mill worker, and his wife, Mary.
In 1911 they lived at 30 Burnley Road, Todmorden, at which time Sam's occupation was given as 'tobacconist and cigar merchant'.

By 1934 the couple were living at 271 Church Road, St Annes on Sea. Sam died in 1942, aged 71, leaving all his property to Ellen. She died on 16 September 1952 in the Kingston Nursing Home, aged 81, leaving £6213.
