William Chadwick was born in 1882 in Blackburn, Lancashire to Edmund and Mary Chadwick. Edmund, a cotton mill manager died in 1886, aged 36. In 1891 William was living in Selborne Street, Witton, Blackburn with his mother and brother, James Edward. By 1901 the family was residing at 215 Revidge Road, Garfield Terrace, Blackburn, and both brothers were employed as solicitors’ clerks.
In 1910 William married Eveline Greenbank, born 1883 in Blackburn. She was the daughter of Thomas Greenbank, an auctioneer and draper, and his wife, Sarah Ann. Eveline was described as a book-keeper in the 1901 census. William and Eveline (Evelyn) had two daughters, Mary, born 1913 and Joan, born 1919. By 1929 William and Eveline had moved to the Fylde and were living in Chatsworth Road, St Annes on Sea. Eveline's mother, Sarah, lived with them for a short time until her death in 1933, aged 82. The 1939 Register showed them still in Chatsworth Road, at which time William was described as a solicitor’s clerk and cashier. Mary married Henri Hipolyte Yersin in the Fylde in 1938 and Joan married Harold Cole in Devon in 1952. Prior to Joan's marriage William and Eveline had also moved to Paignton, Devon.
