ARTIST
Cuthbert Rigby was born in Liverpool on the 14 May 1850. He was apprenticed to an architect in 1865, but in 1872 he became a pupil of William J Bishop and thereafter became a professional artist. He lived in Southport for a while but moved to the Lake District, living in several places, including Kendal, before settling in Ambleside in 1906, where he remained until his death in 1935.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy, mostly views in Cumberland, from 1875 and was elected Associate Member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1877. In 1904 he was a Founder Member of the Lake Artists' Society. According to Graves Dictionary, which lists his exhibitions in London up to 1893, he exhibited 7 paintings at the Royal Academy, 293 at The Royal Watercolour Society and 13 at other London Exhibitions.
He also exhibited 95 paintings at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 16 at the Manchester City Art Gallery, 3 at the Royal Hibernian Academy, 12 at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham, and 1 oil at the Royal Oil Painters Institute.
He was a popular book illustrator and published his own book, 'From Midsummer to Middlemas, a West Cumberland Idyll' in 1891.
He is listed in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists by Mallalieu and Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Professor Dennis Child.
